Creationism Doesn’t Fit in Science Books
Ken Miller’s eloquent and winning testimony back in 2006’s Kitzmiller trial scuttled the creationist’s best chance yet to legally teach religion in science classes so they are holding up his book for review in Texas.
Unfortunately, the 15th book is being held up for review. The popular textbook “Biology” must now be reviewed by a panel of experts to address concerns raised by a creationist.
This is regrettable for Texas’ national image and science education. The textbook is written by Kenneth R. Miller, a Brown University biologist, and Joseph Levine, a biologist and science journalist. It is published by Pearson Education.
We can’t talk about Texas’ textbook troubles without noting that Board Chairwoman Barbara Cargill is an avowed creationist and an appointee of Gov. Rick Perry.
Less troubling, but still unfortunate, was Becky Berger’s critique of the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt text “Environmental Science.”
