That crowing sound you hear is an overconfident Proggie about to get brought crashing down to earth.

Proggie? I won’t call you names. Defend the indefensible Dark. The Democrats are anything but perfect. The GOP/Tea Party is sick. That’s the kindest thing I could say about them. I’ll leave it at that.

How about you actually address what the author is talking about rather than being a partisan hack for your joke of a party? i agree, he’s probably over-confident since we haven’t had a true party collapse since the Whigs over 150 years ago but address his points that you disagree with. Your party has loads of problems on a local and national level. What should have been you guys keeping the governor’s mansion here in Virginia turned into a nightmare because your party’s base is obsessed with nominating people as anti-choice and lgbt rights as possilbe.

While I would welcome the collapse of this party, I think there’s plenty of bigotry, ignorance, and greed in the US to keep the Republican party going for now.

But is there any reason I shouldn’t want the GOP to just fail? I’m really curious about this. Let’s say I despise racism and bigotry. And that I’m also concerned for the health and welfare of everyone in this country. And I believe that education and science are critical to our future.

Why should I vote a party that refuses to treat gays as equals, or works to prevent blacks from voting, or is against providing decent health insurance to those who can’t afford it? It’s a political party in which no one that openly believes in evolution or AGW can be a viable candidate. That’s just crazy.

Where has Allen gone wrong in this, Dark? The central paradox of the modern Republican party is simply this: Candidates must gain the approval of the Tea Party to be nominated, yet TP ideas are solidly rejected by most Americans, and such candidates cannot therefore win in the general. How do you and other sane Republicans propose to resolve this, especially since you are the target of a ferocious purge by the TP fanatics?

An aggravating factor is that the real tea party leadership, people like Sarah Palin, Ted Cruz, and Ted Nugent, are not truly interested in winning. Like their close affiliate, the religious right, they would be perfectly content to keep raking in profits from their speaking engagements, video and book sales, and Fox TV contracts. They win some elections, but it is not strictly necessary for their real goals to be achieved, so long as they do well enough to keep attracting an audience. Being out of power may in fact be helpful, since they can play the contrarian critic constantly without ever having to deal with the consequences of their own alternatives being put to the test.

What is a ‘sane’ Republican? Are they the more intelligent, less hateful Republicans that are, for some reason, still happy to vote for these no-nothing bigots anyway? I have a hard time thinking of that as sane.

A sane elected Republican is the ones who stand with the insane ones, but never says anything that can be quoted, and just has their staff deflect questions from the press and those not aligned with the Tea Bags and insane. Oh and then there are the unelected ones who went over to the Democratic party, but never talked about what and who they once were.

The Tea Party is doomed like all righteous political movements that think their platform represents what God intends. They can’t cooperate with Democrats because to them it is literally making a deal with the devil.

And when their agenda fails they’ll blame it on the fact they didn’t take it far enough. The fix is always to double-down on the radicalism and purge the moderates.

The old-fashioned Republicans may think they are going to squelch the Tea Party influence but the harder they try to kill them off, the more they will incite a war.

I say invest in popcorn. Teabilly aint going down easy.

re: #5 Shiplord Kirel

The approach in the Primary (which is what I thought Jon Huntsman should have done) is to be the loud proud anti-Tea Party guy who confronts and takes on all the other candidates who are vying for the Tea Party support. Forget trying to be the biggest TeaBagger ass-kisser at the Primary debate. Be the one guy who calls out the Tea Party candidates for being out of touch and out of their minds.

That is how the GOP reclaims their party from the John Birch Society/Tea Party. I don’t see it happening though.
