I don’t celebrate Christmas, but I still enjoy the (non-materialistic) aspects of the season and witnessing the cultural traditions. I see nothing wrong with wishing people who do celebrate it a “Merry Christmas”. Likewise, I send gifts and/or cards to friends & family who celebrate it—why wouldn’t I when people are kind enough to do the same for me during Ramadan?

There is no ridiculous “War on Christmas” and anyone who truly believes there is probably needs to see a therapist. Additionally, anyone who’s anti-religion and feels that their unbelief gives them license to be nasty to celebrants should make a serious effort, preferably posthaste, to pull their head out of their ass.1

1. Just to be clear I’m not referring to anything related to the First Amendment’s Establishment Clause here—that’s a completely different matter.

My daughter told me that one of the things she has missed since moving to Israel is “Christmas.” She always enjoyed the decorations and the festivities.

Atheist here-what’s not to like about music, food, and lights at the darkest time of the year? Not to mention giving gifts to those dear to us? Christmas’s very ubiquity removes a lot of the religious significance for the population at large. It is a cultural holiday as well as a religious one.

THIS

A healthy society feels free to enjoy one anothers holidays. Why not share a neighbors joy and vice versa? That’s the big cultural benefit of our melting pot locations. Here in Los Angeles we have Christmas twice. Sorta. Eastern and western roots. This year given a quirk of how calendars work, Hannukah was at about Thanksgiving rather than near Christmas.

So Merry Christmas made a little come back given Hanukkah had come and gone early by my calendar.

Sure there is a “”war”” on Christmas-Heh, by the retail industry that wants to profit at all costs so to speak. Just wait till Target and Walmart discover Ramadan.
