1. Back at the times when the Gipper paid no taxes, he wasn’t being a welfare queen of course: he was taking legal deductions. Completely different. /

2. On a tangent:

Welfare queens? You say you want welfare queens? Okay, I gotcha welfare queens right here:

The contours of the alleged insurance fraud seemed unusual enough: The participants, men and women, were accused of improperly seeking Medicaid benefits for pregnancies, births and postnatal care.

That the defendants were Russian was, perhaps, not altogether unusual, given the number of recent prosecutions for similar insurance schemes perpetrated in New York by immigrants from the former Soviet Union.

But these were no ordinary Russians. They were diplomats posted to New York City, and their wives, accused of fraudulently applying for Medicaid benefits over the past nine years. Prosecutors characterized the scheme as an audacious swindle of the federal health benefits program for the needy, orchestrated by officials in the Russian Consulate in New York and its mission to the United Nations.

If not for last week’s post about the Indian diplomat accused of fraudulent paperwork wrt her maid, I would have gone right past this story.

Grifter… no. Psychopath is the better description.

This is the kicker. The story was only politically worthwhile when framed as story of a welfare cheat, and the corrupting result of uncontrolled government spending. If anyone had the will to connect the dots surrounding her story, they’d soon find that she was not a result of a sprawling welfare state, but very much an exception to the typical welfare recipient, who should have been put away for the good of society. But that wouldn’t have made a good dogwhistle story for Reagan to pull out of his sleeve.

All Reagan did was start the decline of welfare for the poor and started a welfare system for the rich.

No regard for the crimes and the children affected.

*shiver*

I got sick feeling in my stomach while reading this story.

Linda Taylor wasn’t unique in being a brazen criminal, though, since Chicago has seen many such cocky crooks in its history, the most famous of course being Al Capone. But Linda Taylor took her misdeeds to a level of cruelty that even Capone would likely not have tolerated.

Al was honest about being who and what he was. Linda (whatever) was cloak and dagger —literally.

Al didn’t traffick children.

That’s my point. Just reading through this makes clear this was a woman even other criminals feared. She comes across more as a demon than a human being.

Reagan sure fixed it, didn’t he.

Wonder how she survived so long in a world of such predators. You are right, she was freakin’ scary.
