Daunting Mathematical Puzzle Solved, Enables Unlimited Analysis of Encrypted Data
ARMONK, NY — IBM inventors have received a patent for a breakthrough data encryption technique that is expected to further data privacy and strengthen cloud computing security. The patented breakthrough, called “fully homomorphic encryption,” could enable deep and unrestricted analysis of encrypted information — intentionally scrambled data — without surrendering confidentiality. IBM’s solution has the potential to advance cloud computing privacy and security by enabling vendors to perform computations on client data, such as analyzing sales patterns, without exposing or revealing the original data.

This is the thing that I had mentioned on a couple of threads, I don’t begin to claim to understand the underlying mathematics behind what’s going on.
What I do understand is that you could have encrypted data like phone metadata, query / mine / pattern match it like it was plain text, and then if a match is found that justifies access to the plaintext info, a warrant can be sought.
This may be a major tool in the security / privacy balance.
