New Health Insurance Marketplaces Pass 1.1 Million in Enrollment
More than 975,000 Americans have enrolled this month in the Obama administration’s new health insurance marketplaces, pushing total enrollment above 1.1 million, the government said today.
A “welcome surge in enrollment” is preceding the Jan. 1 deadline to become insured, Marilyn Tavenner, administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, said in a statement.
The U.S. health-care industry reaches a turning point on Jan. 1, when the Affordable Care Act takes effect, guaranteeing insurance coverage to all Americans for the first time. Insurers will be barred from rejecting consumers who are sick, or charging them more, and insurers must cover a standard set of benefits nationwide.
