I love the first macro! Also the one that says “Life grows upon life at sea.” Nice depth of field there. I like the new template you’re using too!

I was able to get some pretty nice macros using my 40mm prime and Canon’s 12mm extension tube. The subject, an Altoids Minis box, wasn’t nearly as interesting as your sea creatures, but the writing on it helps to see what’s sharply focused and what’s not (the depth of field is incredibly shallow).

I’m going to test it out with my 50mm and then with my two zoom lenses—the 18-55mm kit lens and the 55-250mm. I’ll set them to manual focus, then try taking a shot at the various focal lengths to see how close I need to be for a sharp image as well as how the depth of field & magnification factor is affected.

There was this video where the photographer was taking pictures of a girl standing in the middle of the street with cars parked on either side of it. As he moved & changed his focal length the cars appeared to move closer to/farther from the girl even though she’d remained in the same spot. Freaky.

It’s all quite fascinating to me. I’m especially intrigued by just how illusory much of our “reality” is. Everything we perceive is totally dependent on the mechanics of the tool we’re using to to look at & measure the world around us. Ditto for the distortion of facial features when doing portraits.

Ah, here, I found the video:
