There are a few things to look out for, unless those bags get washed. I would not want some chicken or other fluids to soak into the cloth, and then use that bag to buy fruits and veggies. So with a little care this can actually save us all some hassle.

I agree. There is also a string shopping bag that is quite popular in France. I think this is close. amazon.com

Fort McMurray Canada has had a single use bag ban (plastic or paper) for over two years. This covers all stores not just groceries. you either bring your reusable bags with you or buy them at the store. Most bags are at least a dollar each. toss them in the wash when you get home if they are dirty they last for years. they have bag exemptions for alcohol, pharmaceuticals and such. Something you get used to, it will not be the end of the world contrary to what some may claim.

Finally, a use for those PBS tote bags.

I always shop at a local Kroger store and kept the plastic bags to recycle when I went shopping the next time. But, I understand that asking humans to try to be responsible for recycling or managing to get the bag into a waste receptacle is damn near impossible.

And as far as having to wash the cloth bags…humans! You know there is going to be issues with people contaminating their foods and getting sick from it.

So, it looks like a new market is going to open up for some kind of reusable grocery bag that will be easily washed, strong and long lasting and made out of something not easily prone to absorbing food goo! Thinkers, designers, materials people…the task is at hand! Money can be made…anything new and a good answer has huge potential for consistent sales.
