“Petard” sounds like it should be incredibly insensitive…

“Petard” literally means “little fart.” In the early days of gunpowder warfare, a petard was a small handheld bomb that drunk daring sappers would place against the walls of fortifications. The procedure was to place the bomb, light the none-too-reliable fuse, and run like hell. Sometimes the device exploded prematurely, throwing the would-be hero into the air, possibly in pieces, at which point he was said to be hoist by his own petard.
