Andy Schlafly is the classic example of what happens to a person who is indoctrinated from birth in a narrow, extremist point of view, and it ain’t pretty.

IIRC, one of Andy Schlafly’s other little projects is a wingnut version of the bible, to remove the many ‘liberal’ passages in the bible that cannot possibly be God’s/Schlafly’s will.

Reality is too liberal for Mr. Schlafly.

I was watching a program on the year 1964 on PBS the other night, and who popped up as a talking head on the political portion but Andy’s mom. She hasn’t changed a bit in 50 years, other than getting old.

1964 was one hell of a year.

Ok, well the first paragraph is dead on right, surprisingly.

But the “Sarah Palin is center right” has got to be sarcasm!

I always picture Andy as walking two paces behind Phyllis replying “Yes, Mother Yes, Mother”

No wonder the Schlafly’s like him:

Ríos Montt denounced a “massive electoral fraud”, blaming Catholic priests who had questioned the mistreatment of the Catholic Mayans, and claimed that the priests were leftist agents. It is alleged that he was given a payoff of several hundred thousand dollars along with the post of military attaché in the embassy in Madrid, Spain, where he stayed until retiring in 1977.

In 1978, he left the Roman Catholic Church and became a minister in the California-based evangelical/pentecostal Church of the Word;[16] since then Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson have been personal friends. Ríos Montt’s brother Mario Enrique Ríos Montt is a Catholic bishop, and in 1998 succeeded the assassinated Bishop Juan Gerardi as head of the human rights commission uncovering the truth of the disappearances associated with the military and his brother.

re: #5 Bridgeghazi: Never Forget!!11!!!!11

I think it also has to do with the fact that Andy seems to think that we are still fighting the cold war (or should be).

I suspect the reasoning also goes something like this:

Efraín Ríos Montt may have been a murderous thug at the time but he at least claimed to be an evangelical Christian who was fighting the Godless forces of Marxism. “Saint Reagan” actually visited Guatemala in Dec. of 1982 during some of the worst of the human rights abuses and proclaimed…

“President Ríos Montt is a man of great personal integrity and commitment. … I know he wants to improve the quality of life for all Guatemalans and to promote social justice.”

…followed of course by supplying him with even more arms shipments, sigh. :(

Therefore since Reagan said Montt was one of the good guys in the war against the “evil empire.” And since Montt was smart enough to continue to at least pay lip service to evangelical Christianity, Andy sees him as O.K. too.

The fact that he used kidnapping, rape, torture, assassinations, and near genocidal extermination techniques against the indigenous population doesn’t matter in the least. Because he was “fighting on the side of the Angels” in Andy’s eyes and after having been blessed by Saint Reagan could not possibly have done any wrong.

Rios Montt is a favorite of the religious far right because he was a devout Pentecostal who tried to set up a kind of holy roller empire in Guatemala. He was overthrown by his own officers, not primarily for his human rights violations, but because he had dismissed experienced officers and promoted fellow religionists in the army.

A kid with a IQ over room temperature would have rebelled against his extremist conservative parents. The smart ones get out of that dead-end subculture as soon as they graduate High School. Andy is not one of the smart ones.

I’ll just note that Communist insurgency was a reality in Guatemala in the late 1970’s / early 1980’s and Regan had decided to oppose such insurgencies wherever they occurred. Whatever he said in public, on a governmental level anti-Communism was the overriding principal.

But let’s keep things on Andy Schlafly and leave arguing the Cold War in Latin America for another time. There’s plenty of FAIL in Andy’s ‘Conserpedia’ to keep us busy.

If you’re going to ‘just note’ that ‘Communist insurgency was a reality’, then I’m just going to note that

In 1954, Árbenz was overthrown in a coup orchestrated by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) on the pretext that a socialist government would become a Soviet puppet in the Western Hemisphere. Historians have alleged the CIA overthrew Árbenz to protect the property of the United Fruit Company (later Chiquita Brands International Inc.), a major US company that faced losing large amounts of land due to agrarian reform,

In 1963, the junta called an election, which it permitted Arbenz to return from exile and contest. However a coup from within the military, backed by the Kennedy Administration, prevented the election from taking place, and forestalled a likely victory for Arbenz. The new regime intensified the campaign of terror against the guerrillas that had begun under Ydígoras-Fuentes.[32]

In 1979, the U.S. president, Jimmy Carter, who had until then been providing public support for the government forces, ordered a ban on all military aid to the Guatemalan Army because of its widespread and systematic abuse of human rights.[30] However, documents have since come to light that suggest that American aid continued throughout the Carter years, through clandestine channels.[35]

In 1992, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Rigoberta Menchú for her efforts to bring international attention to the government-sponsored, US backed genocide against the indigenous population.[37]

That’s all from Wikipedia. Anti-Communism was often a cover story for plutocrats. ‘Communist insurgencies’ were sometimes the peoples’ self defense force.

Now you can go back to Andy Schlafly.
