This is why papers need to go through the peer review process, and I don’t mean the review it goes through at the journal before publication but the review and testing other scientists give it after publication, before it gets out into the general population of know nothings.

The problem is that most people don’t remember those days and they get swept up by fads.

As b_sharp said, this is why papers go through peer review. What happened with the infamous 1998 Lancet paper was that Andrew Wakefield concealed a massive conflict of interest and not enough attention was paid to his dishonest methods. When subsequent research put the lie to Wakefield’s claims, the circumstances of his ‘study’ were investigated and his misdeeds brought to light.

For those misdeeds, Andrew Wakefield was struck off the register of physicians in the UK, which is why he is no longer called ‘doctor’.

Oh I know the story. The Amish communities have a mini outbreak every once in a while. My grand daughter was exposed to whooping cough in day care, they think from a non vaccinated child who had the bug. Drag us back to the caves and sharper rocks will be called technology. Millions die needlessly and this only adds to the tally. It can’t happen here. Can it? Right.
