My contirbution to the Saturday night music tradition …
Once upon a time there was a band out of Dublin called “Thin Lizzy” who most of us on this side of the “pond” know only due to a couple of commercial hits, namely “The Boys Are Back In Town” and “Jailbreak” … Beyond our lack of appreciation for the majority of their songs, deemed less then definitive pop-culture worthy of radio play, the folks who made up “Lizzy” produced no less then twenty-one albums in as many years. Phil Lynott, the singer, lead songwriter and bass player for the band was a on some days a poet who rivaled, in some regards, his idol, Bob Dylan. On other days he was a ruthless drunk who drove his band-mates to reject his vision in the most unpleasant ways … the most influential was his on again, off again rogue guitar player by the name of Gary Moore. Gary was always close to Phil, and their friendship is up there with the true legends of rock, not too different from the relationships shared between Mick and Keith, Paul and Ringo, Pete and Roger and, of course Robert and Jimmy. Though they could not ultimately work together in the long-run, they continued to appear on each other’s albums, here and there and they remained close friends until the day Phil died. Phil died in ‘86, and sadly, Gary Moore passed away two years ago — though he did dedicate almost all of his albums in the interim to Phil.
The link I’ve included will take you to a great medley of Lizzy’s most known songs as performed by Gary Moore and Scott Gorham (one of the other Lizzy guitarists, and the only member from America, by the way) as they pay tribute to Phil on what would have been his 60th birthday.
Okay — enough of my rambling …! Enjoy!
