It’s really considered bad form here to take a comments feud to a page post, so don’t be surprised if this gets deleted, it won’t be because of the story or writing, but because you are directing a page post at a community member, right or wrong.

I…don’t see where I’m taking any comments feud to a Page post. That’s a small amount of filler if anything and its whole point was to prevent a ‘when is someone a woman’ discussion in this thread; the key here isn’t how to treat T*people—I’m not (yet) going to try to change any thoughts on that. It’s to point (and I would say laugh, but not when he’s getting upvotes) at the prison-rape apologist in the source article’s comments.

And I’d like to avoid turning this comment string into a feud, too, so that’s where I’ll leave this for now.

Disturbing that someone who’s apparent “crime” is trying to enter a country after a previous overstay ends up in a jail cell rather than simply pointed back in the direction of their home country.

Gender is not sex. As a feminist woman, I don’t buy into that conflation and never will.

Female sensibilities are so varied and vast that changing one’s appearance doesn’t even come close to what women are as human beings.

So you’re telling me that because I was born with a(n undersized) penis, I’m a man always and forever. See, this was what I wanted to avoid by acknowledging the existence of your point in the body of the Page.

And the hell I am, BTW. My breasts, during puberty without any extra hormonal assistance, grew to be ‘B’s. Only an ill-advised experiment with trying to feminize myself further with herbal supplements caused them to disappear (temporarily; with chemical assistance, I became a 38-C). I was (secretly) proud of them. I got ‘miss’ and ‘ma’am’ on the phone in the three jobs that I worked before ever seeing a therapist. My singing voice is mezzo-soprano. And I’ve never had even enough biceps strength to do a single pullup, even when I was getting plenty of exercise, like on the soccer fields. When I was 12, a creepoid 6th-grader tricked me into letting him run his hand up my leg and under my shorts—so I even know the sexual harassment/abuse side. Twice over, actually, ‘cause I was also raped by a friend’s roommate when I had to crash with them because my car died and I didn’t know it until midnight. In addition, there’s a reasonable chance I’m intersexed, since my parents had an amnio done on me in order to rule out having passed hemophilia to me (I’ve never had an actual genetic test done since my birth), and afterwards were more prepared for a female than male baby. And I even had variable emotions. The only thing I’ve never experienced that you have is sitting down on a toilet and, when it stands up, it looking like a bowl full of cranberry juice.

You defining a woman as ‘anyone who became CAPABLE OF CARRYING A CHILD TO TERM between ages 10 and 14’ isn’t just an insult to me, but to plenty of infertile genetically female girls.

This is very poorly worded and doesn’t make sense. If “female sensibilities” are so varied and vast as you say then you should spend some time explaining why that “varied vastness” doesn’t trump something as seemingly incidental as genitalia or one’s chromosomes?

See what I mean, it’s self contradicting. Either “what women are” constitutes a universe of experiences so great that they cannot be simplistically contained by birth gender, or they’re just a set of chromosomes characterized by a vagina, uterus and pair of ovaries.

Also, your use of the term “changing one’s appearance” was reductive, and probably insulting. I’m pretty sure that TG people aren’t just super committed transvestites. Their entire personal identity undergoes a metamorphosis, and how a person, any person, thinks of themselves is important.
