The CNN article on Coots said that he previously lost part of a finger to a snake bite and witnessed others dying from bites. Yet he continued. That’s scary faith. cnn.com

File under death by natural causes; natural to the kind of ‘work’ he was in. Could also be filed under ‘natural selection.’ These people are still probably worried about traveling off the edge of the earth.

Refusing medical attention is stupid,

I’m a Christian, but you better believe that if I think I’m having a heart attack I’m going to get myself to a hospital or ambulance ASAP.

I wonder if he might still be alive if not for his own foolishness.

Of course he would. I wouldn’t care about these idiots getting themselves killed except for the innocents they leave behind such as widows and orphans. Hopefully some of the members of his cult have learned a lesson from this.

Doubtful. He’s far from the first idiot snake handler to die from snakebite. This is a lesson they don’t want to learn.

I guess Darwin won this round.

The only thing these types of irresponsible preachers have in common with Darwin is the fact that they both now are worm food. And then….. nothing after that.

It’s not faith, it’s show time. So it’s an old joke, but…..What does a (fill in the blank) say right before he dies?

“Hey ya’ll! Watch THIS!”

Here, hold my sacramental wine…

Actually he was drunk off of the Holy Spirit. But on the other hand he was killed by a snake because he lacked faith. I suppose this means that he was NOT getting a free pass into Heaven, and I find this the greatest irony. These people believe very strongly that if you have enough faith you will be saved from snakebites and death and will have eternal life in Heaven, but the fact that the snake bit him meant that he lacked faith… and then he died that way. It should really be a wake-up call to his fellow parishoners that there is no easy exit for snake handlers.

re: #8 John Vreeland

Good post, I was just going to say that if the snake bit him and he died from it then that simply means that his faith was not adequate to the other members of his sect. The two verses commonly cited by the Pentecostal sects that use snake handling as (a small) part of their services are:

Luke 10:19

Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

Mark 16:17-18

And these signs shall follow them that believe: In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues. They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

This is also where the idea of “speaking in tongues” comes from. The original meaning according to most theologists was that adherents would be able to speak in regional (earthly) languages previously unknown to them.

The current doctrinal interpretation used by some Pentecostal sects. Where someone gets up and spouts meaningless gibberish that is then “translated” by a second member of the congregation as a “divine revelation” is another “recent” tradition that is so far almost exclusively limited to America.

Back on topic: If he was injured by being bitten by the snake then his faith was insufficient to protect him. At least that is all that the other members of his sect will have to say about it.

It is a shame Jesus never said anything about being protected from playing “Russian Roulette” with five loaded chambers in your pistol. If he had there would be a lot fewer of these people around by now… :p

Wait, let me put my usual schadenfreude up here out of the way.

This is sad. I find it sad in the same way that I find anyone who dies from attempting anything so obviously fraught with risk. Like those people who drive too fast, jump out of helicopters with skis on, hold their breath for deep-diving competitions, this guy isn’t much different. But his thrill was expressed through something he called faith. Do I get it? No. But I ski the blues and blacks and leave the scary stuff to people who enjoy that kind of thing. He, like everyone else who takes risks, knew what they were but had faith that the bad thing wouldn’t happen to him.
