Well, if JMS is doing it, Harlan will have plenty of input.

So when’s the next “Dangerous Visions” coming out?

The story at I09 got ghost edited from “Television” to “Film” so I updated.

There was a movie I saw not too long ago, not a big-time movie but a good one, where people were given the first 20 years of their life free, and then they had to earn every minute of their life from that point on, and a countdown timer was grafted into their body … the interesting thing being that certain privileged people would have banked up as many years of living as they liked and of course used that to push people with less time around.

It was basically taking our economy of artificial scarcity and putting something so mortal as the consequence that life became what looked to me like a total nightmare. I wonder if the writers of that story read this one?

@#1 Chadu

Hopefully this will work out better than Ellison/Roddenberry did.

Well, considering it’s JMS, and the two are good friends and actual collaborators, I don’t see a Roddenberry scenario here. I think Joe knows VERY well that Harlan has a history of his work getting mangled by the studios, and I suspect he will make sure it works or he’ll drop it.

I don’t believe we’ll see a “Cordwainer Bird” credit.

(FWIW, I believe the best adaptation of an Ellison story - ever - was the “new” Twilight Zone episode that adapted “Paladin of the Lost Hour”, with a heartrendingly beautiful Danny Kaye performance. )

Oh, and fwiw — both of those linked books are WELL worth it, and contain a number of pieces and observations about society and tolerance. One two-parter, “The Common Man”, describes a program wherein various reps of said “common” group were interviewed. The comments and attitudes (from the late ’60s) are like reading Red State and Newsmax and Fox News. Almost identical abuse of the language (and the same damned rhetoric) that we see today.

Plus la change, oui?

On the brighter side, there’s some incredible humor. And the second volume contains his tale of the time he was invited to be a batchelor contestant on the Dating Game, before it began airing. Suffice to say it never made it to air, and is hilarious….
