Not that I support the GOP on this but wouldn’t some college freshmen still be 17?

Very few. To put things in perspective, I was one of the youngest people in my graduating high school class and I turned 18 the July after the fact. At the very youngest, these freshmen are going to be well over 17 and a half.

And have probably been fully functional for at least 4-5 years. That can’t be an argument that they’re too young … when they’re adults in 6 months.

I don’t see it being billed as Porn Week either.

If their parents are afraid they will hear about s-e-x before their 18th birthday, I guess they could hold their kids back a semester.//

I turned 18 pretty late, but still only in late September of my freshman year of college. If an event such as this is scheduled sometime in the January-June time frame, everyone should be 18 or older, unless there is a child prodigy enrolled.

Any student who doesn’t want to participate in “Sex Week” can just not attend any of the events, but I don’t think any lawmaker should propose writing a law to address the issue. When I was at UGA, there were plenty of events held on campus. I attended some, but not others. I think how a particular student comports him/herself when away from home for the first time in his/her life has a lot to do with his/her upbringing. I did not go nuts in Athens, GA because my parents weren’t around. I realized that although I could attend as many parties as I desired, my parents expected me to graduate, and I did, in three years instead of four. I had a great time in Athens during those three years!!!

Fair point that others have addressed well.

I would only add that protecting 17-year olds is clearly not the goal of this bill. It’s the puritanical streak in the south (due to the heavy influence of conservative Christians) that motivates legislation like this. It’s not the tiny percentage of college students under 18, but the whole idea of open sexual expression.

The RW Christianist agenda, among other things, opposes abortion, all gay activity, premarital sex, and even contraception much of the time. Their fear is that open discussion of human sexuality will lead to more of all these “sins”.
