U.S. Bans Visas for Perpetrators of Sexual Violence, but Education Is Key
In a clear sign that lawmakers are taking steps to stop violence against women — particularly the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war — Secretary of State John Kerry made the announcement on Feb. 25. Earlier this year, President Obama also released a report and statement calling for an end to violence against women.
Although the visa ban is incredibly significant, Julia Drost from Amnesty International told BuzzFeed that this “should be something that should come after a lot of other prior stuff.”
Prior “stuff” includes educating men and boys that violence against women is wrong and deplorable. There are dozens of programs worldwide dedicated to education about sexual violence in an effort to end the epidemic.
