Looks great to me, but I’m just a dumb engineer ;)

Scary if some ways, but also impressive. China’s leaders “make no little plans”. The quote is from Daniel Hudson Burnham, Chicago’s most influential architect of the late 19th-early 20th Centuries. Thinking big still has currency in Chicago, as does finding ways past nature’s limitations which is why this project impresses me as much as it does.

i would like hearing the views of those lizards who live out in California on this matter, since the Golden State has seen many projects of this nature.

Okay my $.02
Our levy system that protects Sacramento and low lying central valley areas are in severe disrepair. LA is building a truly massive water recovery/groundwater plant to catch water as it travels down the concrete LA river.

That flooding river killed people back in the day, but that concrete meant none of the water soaked back into groundwaters. So near Forest lawn and Griffith Park or where our 134 freeway meets interstate 5 the project is going in.

Science has now discovered that California droughts can last a century. Those droughts predate industry and our explosive growth in population. Some big long term cycle of flood and drought. Way longer than El Nino and the decadal oscillation.

It is going to take massive projects to water our population. And we have got to get to mandatory native/low water plants for nice yards. People forget this is desert land.

We take clean water for granted. China is just America 100-200 years ago. The 363 mile Erie canal, amazing in its simplicity, was first used 193 years ago, and entirely built by hand. What you see in this pic no longer exists. The section in the upper left actually carried the canal over the Mohawk River. The rest has been filled in. Beautiful stone work, all chiseled by hand, still exist and is easy to identify if you know what to look for. Roman aqueducts? Still in use. Clean water is necessary for the well being of the population.

The Chinese oligarchs presumably don’t see much profit in conservation. Construction brings profits.
I’d suggest sophisticated water treatment plants and water reuse would be a better use of money than pipelines. It doesn’t help to have a pipeline if water is short everywhere.

This applies to California too.

re: #5 calochortus

I think California’s problem is only partially the result of over-development and excessive use of water. The other problem is that there does not seem to be enough water to begin with because of the drought.
