It is ridiculous especially knowing the discrimination many Irish encountered. And Senator Norris is right too, it’s never been about Roman Catholicism either. Too many Irish-Americans think St. Patrick’s Day is about hating on the British and getting shitplastered. Now I enjoy the latter as much as the next guy but the holiday for me is about having some fun and it’s also my way of remembering my grandmother who was of Irish decent who got me and my cousins into Irish culture.

I never celebrate the day. In Athlone where I grew up, we celebrated the 1690 Siege of Athlone, en.wikipedia.org. while we do have a holiday for paddys day, we bring in the fire works for siege week - and it is a whole week.

St. Patrick’s day is a huge celebration in Ireland, but it is so because of the tourist euros, it does not hold the same reverence it seems to hold for everyone else.

Easter and Halloween are also week long events, St Patrick’s just doesnt have the same cache`

I’m here in Boston, and of Irish decent on both sides of my family. The issue is bizzaro land to me, but it seems to be where holy rollers and older white guys (who are either underemployed or retired) intersect. And it’s uniquely American. I can’t explain it.

While drinking Guinness beer, a company that discriminated against Catholics for decades and helped put down the Easter Rising.

True beats the hell out of dying Bud Light green and calling it “Irish” though.
