It’s a mistake to claim this is all about the right wing. There are creationists Democrats. according to Gallup.

I’m not denying creationism on the right. I’m saying the headline ignores a big part of the problem. the part that happens to sit on the left side of the aisle, but has refrained from big public stupidity like “evolution is a lie from hell”.

Dem partisans don’t want to hear this, sorry but lets not let partisan desires lead us away from a comprehensive solution. Added Edit-And those indy creationists too.

So over half of Republicans and a third of everybody else thinks we were created as-is within the last 10,000 years, science be damned.

This civilization is doomed. Of course, that always happens eventually.

The more politically significant numbers would be questions relating to support or opposition to the idea of teaching creationism/ID as science in public schools.

That’s the battle that has to be fought and won.

In my experience, creationists get really defensive when you imply/show how uneducated they are. They seem to feel that pointing out facts and logic are somehow a personal attack.

For creationists, it’s usually deliberate ignorance as opposed to simple lack of education. Defensiveness about such an attitude is only to be expected.

Well here’s the thing and you’re right it’s not partisan but the problem is there’s only really one party that is fighting the teaching of evolution in schools. So, yeah you’re right, there’s plenty of Democratic creationists too and that stinks but the right/Republicans have been the ones fighting tooth and nail evolution being taught not the Democrats/left which I think is the real issue since more evolution taught in schools= more believers in evolution

He is right of course - if you are using a cellphone you really do not have the right to claim the bible is a credible form of scientific history.

Big picture, US Congress and big cities-You are right for sure.
Perhaps the numbers would suggest that at a local level, school boards, parish and small towns we see the creationist impulse cross political boundaries.

But here is the rub-The idea this is a right wing thing serves Dem candidates extremely well. Even those who might not fight to good fight for real science instead of creationism.

You know, it’s kind of a funny thing that shows the difference between republicans and democrats. republicans read genesis and see it as a story about a father punishing disobedient children and throwing them out of the house. I read Genesis and I’m struck that before God casts Man out of Eden, he makes clothes for Adam and Eve.

True point that it gets more complicated when we get more local and rural, however, if the right wants to stop the perception that it’s anti-science, wouldn’t it help to nominate people who aren’t hostile to science for office? I mean we have numerous R legislators on the record of likening Darwin’s theories to anything from Nazism to Marxism and everything in between. You’re right that the Dems need to fight for science rather than just using it as a fighting point against R candidates but the R’s are doing us no favors.

In other words, the Democrats are more or less compromised, and the Republicans are, virtually without exception, insane/evil.

We really can’t hope to get back to a sensible two party system until the GOP is reformed to (or replaced by) a party that at least deals with reality.

No amount of local or candidate-specific backsliding by Democrats on science (or any other important issue) is as damaging as the GOP party orthodoxy of being wrong about everything.

Yeah I guess that’s my point. The fact that there are some people who suck on science in the Democratic Party doesn’t make up for the fact that the Republican Party’s platform is openly hostile to science and filled with candidates and officials who espouse anti-science rhetoric all the time.

What an excellent LGF page! The original at RawStory is worth reading. It’s truly sad that creationists would hate the Cosmos series for the way it presents science as fun, beautiful, awesome, and self-consistent, each area (e.g. astronomy, biology, chemistry) always striving for consistency with every other area.

Well, if the RWNJ’s need a time-out from hating on the President, the beautiful Cosmos show will do fine as their next target.

re: #21 Ming

Its not really sad, its to be expected. Creationist can’t stand anything that debunks their literal interpretation of their creation stories. To creationists, if the part of their sacred text is wrong, the whole thing must be. They also can’t than justify forcing people to live the way they think their god tells them to behave.
