one argument i have never heard about the peace corp is : ‘they just wont leave me alone’

that of course is a common problem with the U.S. military! if they have you in your sights (especially if you do well on the ASVAB) they never leave you alone - never…

sorry if this seems a bit superfluous, overly wordy and difficult to read …

If you are interested in more on the evolutionary side of altruism - e,o wilson’s ‘The Social Conquest of Earth’ is an excellent place to start.

Rand’s views are as old as the hills.

E.g.,

“The modern conservative is engaged in one of man’s oldest exercises in moral philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness.” —- John Kenneth Galbraith

that is the point isnt it - that this is about choice - a choice to do the logical, and morally imperative, or the illogical and self -interested.

I think they realize this - that they know they were given a choice in empathy over apathy, but failed the ethical test, and as a symptom of self preservation of the ego, become randians.

If Rand had done something original, I’d have given her a few points. Not enough to make her a thinker worth pondering but I wouldn’t despise her as I now do.

But her philosophy is not the least bit original. All it is is Marxism reversed so that what is bad is good and what is good is bad. She is the Marxist equivalent of a Satanist. She accepts the theology and inverts it.

But as Galbraith points out it is an excellent method to add an apparent high moral tone to indulging in the Deadly sins of Avarice, Pride and Wrath.

i agree, and i resist using the term ‘objectavist’ - for one - nothing objective about being inherently into one’s own self interest - that is personal bias.. and entirely subjective.

I’ve found that the word co-dependent wasn’t coined until after Rand. If you insert co-dependent when she writes altruism you may get a different understanding. I did.

Regardless, her writings still don’t work well as economic policy.

I probably should have written “Regardless, her writings still don’t work well as economic policy, if you wish to live in a relatively peaceful world.

Personally, I think feeding people and providing the basics including education is far cheaper than the alternative. It has nothing to do with emotion or religious responsibility.

In this I am totally on board with rational self-interest. I want to live in a world in which I don’t have to bar my windows and doors and in which I can enjoy the people I meet thru my day and not fear them.
