The fact that there are only 67 black players in MLB is indeed tragic, but it’s not because of racism. Baseball is just not as popular with younger black kids as basketball and football are. It’s not seen as a possible career in the same way the other two sports are. Not anymore.
Believe me, if there were tons of young black players tearing up the minor leagues they’d be brought up the Show in a heartbeat. All anyone cares about is if you can play.

“only 67 African Americans” isn’t the same thing as “only 67 black players”.

Most of the Dominican players are black, the Panamanians, even the Cubans…

The article does use “black” and African American interchangeably in that very same sentence, but I take that point.

I found this study summary on the MLB website from last year that explores the trend of decreasing percentages of African Americans and whites (generally, Americans, since more foreign nationals are in MLB now). Pretty interesting.

I decided baseball was lame when I was a teenager in the 1990s, and I wonder how many other kids have similar feelings
