i’ve got a couple of friends who found themselves living around SLC for business in the past ten years, and they’ve all told me that the town was more or less de-facto segregated on religious lines. so it’s good to hear that some people are trying.

i used to read a blog called “Religion Dispatches” that features a Mormon columnist named Joanna Brooks who is also trying to start a dialogue between modern Mormons and seculars. (i stopped reading them because they typically feature “insidery” divinity school perspectives that try to pass themselves off as something radical)

I still like warren throckmorton at RD, but i think patheos has a more combative/debate oriented approach by doing more of the theoretical controversial line crossing,

at least at patheos you dont always get the “yeah i do sort of mildly agree with your pragmatic outlook” as opposed to patheos, which just makes you feel dirty and in need of a shower.

i did not read it but i think i saw a headline at patheos today : secular humanism requires religion, or something of that sort.

so you say nonsense! but patheos will make you feel dirty when they do manage to provide some reasonably pointed observations about people of faith or without it.

and it makes you feel dirty…

re: #2 palmerskiss

that’s really cool, i hadn’t seen patheos yet. i scoped it out a little (fun friday night, ha), and i was impressed by really wide diversity over there, including the preacher stuff. it’s quite accessible. and i’m thinking, wow, some progressivish christians might actually decide to read something about Islam or paganism while they’re over there.

altho i wish there was a “recommended reading” for the christian sections like there were in the sections for other religions, but i can’t complain about any of the actual recommended readings lists tho, they’re not bad at all. the scene struck me as pretty christiany at first glance, but i was happy to see that the pagan writing about the crossover between pagan lore and christian origins was using bart ehrman as a source.

i’ll keep an eye on patheos tho, i didn’t read the comment threads or get a feel for the community and i’m curious. thanks for the tip!
