They don’t worship Reagan the man, they worship Reagan the idol.

A few fries short of a Happy Meal, they await the return of The Cowboy. They search the horizon and mutter mangled quotes all the while supporting grifter after insufferable grifter. Pictures adorn walls as the sun slowly sets on reality. Cult Of The Cowboy. Cowboy is. Cowboy Will. Cowboy.

I’m not surprised at all honestly. From what it seems to me and I am no fan of Thatcher and her ideas, it seems to me that Thatcher was an intelligent enough person. Reagan as the officials quoted say was dogmatic and shallow as that quote about Keynes being gay can attest.

Yeah, but he could tell funny stories, even if they kind of wandered off topic during the later years. Sort of like your crazy old Uncle Joe, except with his finger on the nuclear button.

LOL. That’s exactly the word I’ve always used to described Reagan, that he was a bozo. Nice to have it confirmed.

Did those guys go on to script Top Gear? Just kidding. But bashing American Presidents & various American people and products is a sport in the British Isles. Obama certainly has his critics over there too. I don’t dismiss this out of hand but I keep the atmosphere in mind.

If one listen to Reagans fans he’s a saint. If you listen to his critics he’s the man that oversaw igniting WW3 and failed to help the economy so badly the recession continued to the end of his administration. Both overstate terribly. Both were heartfelt predictions.

Wright’s summation of the twin threads of the Administration’s policy objectives was equally damning. He described Reaganomics as “unsophisticated… it’s component parts self-contradictory” and his foreign policy as cartoonish and based on Reagan’s Wild West heritage. “California is on the look out for baddies and Public Baddie No 1 is the Soviet Union… baddies, as we all know, have only one proper fate: to bite the dust.”

I find this statement by Wright as evidence against his way of seeing the world , not against Ronald Reagan’s views. Because despite Ambassador Wright’s humbugs, within 10 years of Wright’s having put those words on paper, the Soviet Union did indeed ‘bite the dust’.

Most diplomats in the early 1980’s saw the existence of USSR as a relatively permanent fact of global politics. The genius of Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher was that they dared to think otherwise; They believed the Soviet Union could be gotten rid of, and they did it without a major war.

Reposting my comment from my redundant thread (sorry didn’t see this one)

Reagan and Thatcher may have dared to think and say otherwise, but they didn’t really do anything that the Soviet Union didn’t do to itself. USSR also experienced stagflation in the 70s, and then made the unwise decision to go to war against Afghanistan before their oil production started petering out in 1989.

And the USSR never started raising its defense spending in response to the USA until 1988, the 12th Five Year Plan started in 86 was more about infrastructure until the Eastern Bloc started breaking off from the Soviets (because of the oil bust). The idea that Reagan or Thatcher somehow got rid of the USSR by talking sternly at it is mythical.

I mean, “we should never forget that Keynes was gay” is something Gohmert has probably said.

re: #8 team_fukit

My take on it is simple: The West did not win the Cold War. The Soviet Union lost.

A rather different thing than what the Right believes.
