If it crashed on the balcony it was over private property, so there is that, but I don’t know why Feds are involved.

True if only by a few feet and by accident.
To me it just had a glitch, got into atti (no gps) mode and “crashed” as in little model plane “crash”. Maybe batteries got low and it was trying to return to it’s original launching spot. Or the pilot messed up. Anyway it’s not much of a bigger deal than a model sailplane doing the same thing. I wonder how the bad freakout would go if people started putting little cameras in kites. Heh I may just do that on a windy weekend.

What is it with the deep fear of a camera catching images from a public area? Photography in public areas is a 1st Amendment protected activity. So WTF?!

Because Muslims could be using it to surreptitiously beam some of their dreaded noxious creeping shariah mind control cooties into the windows? //

Heh, funny you say that. some time ago I was getting a hard time from a very self important young security guard and I got my back up a bit. “you could be some Muslim terrorist” he says. So I said “thanks for the update, now I understand you to be a really crappy guard AND a bigot too.” It got a little more tense until a sheriff showed up and we had a nice talk. After all I was on a very public sidewalk. Taking snaps of a nice building.

I haven’t gone out to NYC to take photos since… gosh, prolly since pre-9/11. The hijab, y’know? IMO, it’s highly unlikely an actual terrorist would wear hijab to take photos of a target, but people can be paranoid (as your experience demonstrates). I’ve done it around Jersey without ever being bothered, but I don’t usually photograph buildings. I’ve never gone anywhere except around my neighborhood with the DSLR.

A quadcopter taking HD video through the window of an apartment might be frowned on.

Yeah, but the article didn’t say it was an apartment building, just that t was a “skyscraper” and that the crashed device was found on a 30th floor balcony. It could’ve been an an office.

That still doesn’t explain why the feds would be interested though (unless it was a federal office building).

You are right to be careful of course as infuriating and saddening as that is.

The building was One Metropolitan Square the tallest in St. Louis, if their logo is any indication they’re run by the Dhamra Initiative from Lost.

The FAA is probably interested to see if their ban on commercial use of drones was violated. One Met is home to at least three massively high power law firms. A drone was taking video close to a building like that could plausibly have been part of an industrial surveillance / opposition research investigation.

Keep in mind that unless the crash was spectacular the police / feds almost certainly have the contents of the Go Pro camera, informing them as to at least some of the drone’s intended purpose.

Let’s be paranoid (like in the DHS job description):
If it can position a Go Pro, it can position a grenade.

What seems way more likely was some architectural beauty footage. And the restriction on commercial use is not even enforceable! It was set aside due to a lack of process to promulgate the rule., The props on those drones drown out sounds like voices from behind thick office window glass.

The pictured drone is much cuter than the black ones. iDrone?

That’s a pic of the same model drone that was lost at the building above. Very popular for aerial photog.

See the case of Zablidowsky’s drone, September of 2013, in Manhattan. Almost an exact case, Zablidowsky (of Brooklyn) was flying his drone from a balcony in Manhattan. The camera shows it hitting a few buildings, then plunging to earth near a high-congestion (pedestrian and vehicle) area.

Downtown areas are restricted airspace, thus federal authority. Flying a vehicle in a reckless manner is reckless behavior, a criminal act.

“oh, but it didn’t hurt anyone,” does not change either of those facts.
