The reÂcent deÂciÂsion by LibÂeral party leader Justin Trudeau to deÂmand that LibÂeral canÂdiÂdates be pro-choice has genÂerÂated so much meÂdia atÂtenÂtion one has to quesÂtion his asÂserÂtion that, â€śitâ€™s [aborÂtion] a deÂbate that has been setÂtled for the vast maÂjorÂity of CanaÂdiÂans and we donâ€™t need to reÂopen that isÂsue.â€ť
Far from beÂing setÂtled, he has reÂopened the deÂbate.
Many pro-choice supÂportÂers disÂmiss atÂtempts to chalÂlenge the staÂtus quo by claimÂing womenâ€™s abÂsolute right to aborÂtions is guarÂanÂteed/proÂtected by sec. 7 of the CanaÂdian CharÂter of Rights and FreeÂdoms. To them, a quick, â€śItâ€™s the CharÂter stuÂpid,â€ť is sufÂfiÂcient to put any pro-life misÂcreÂant in her/his place, and thatâ€™s supÂposed to put an end to the disÂcusÂsion. AfÂter all, who wants to stand against the conÂstiÂtuÂtion?
