Russ Campbell’s Blog: Tom Mulcair’s Pledge Not to Hike Personal Taxes Is Meaningless—He’ll Use a Carbon Tax
Thomas MulÂcair, leader of the fedÂeral New DeÂmocÂrats has, reÂportÂedly, made a pledge to CanaÂdian votÂers not to raise their perÂsonal taxes if he beÂcomes prime minÂisÂter. But he wont need to raise perÂsonal inÂcome taxes, will he? He’ll imÂpleÂment a carÂbon tax.
MulÂcair made the pledge when beÂing inÂterÂviewed by the OtÂtawa CitÂiÂzen. He was exÂplainÂing why it’s time for CanaÂdiÂans to elect their first fedÂeral NDP govÂernÂment. Granted, MulÂcair’s NDP is the ofÂfiÂcial opÂpoÂsiÂtion, but it is trailÂing both the ConÂserÂvÂaÂtives and the LibÂerÂals so badly in any polls I have seen, his pledge does seem cheeky.
“We’re sayÂing that perÂsonal taxes will not be touched. That’s a firm unÂderÂtakÂing. That’s a conÂtract with the CanaÂdian votÂing pubÂlic on our beÂhalf,” MulÂcair said, acÂcordÂing to the OtÂtawa CitÂiÂzen.
