To make the leap that Citizens United being repealed or better yet outlawed is somehow suppression of free speech shows there is no lie that will remain untold by that open sewer called The Tea Party.

Ted Cruz: Drama Queen.

Ted Cruz: Drama Queen.

He’s far worse than that; he’s a demagogue.

4 Ian G.  May 23, 2014 2:07:01pm

Oh, so this is about campaign finance. Given Tailgunner Ted’s religious lunacy, I figured this had to do with gay marriage, and how it’s destroying the 1st amendment right of Christians to practice their religion.

5 Rightwingconspirator  May 23, 2014 2:11:30pm

Okay just to suspend disbelief for a fun crazy second, lets say the Democrats could just up and repeal an amendment. Who is stupid enough to think that would be the 1st?! Maybe another one comes to mind as characterized by some way out on the left as a anarchism that should be put away.

The mans story is not internally consistent is it?

6 CuriousLurker  May 23, 2014 2:14:50pm

Slippery slope—we were warned about the outrages leading to this!!11!

Remember how upset I was when FEMA/ATF/DEA/First Lady/Obamatron came and took away all my guns?

Me neither.

8 Jayleia  May 23, 2014 2:20:27pm

So…a sitting senator, a member of The World’s Greatest Deliberative Body, and someone who nominally, as part of his job, is to pass laws that are constitutional. You would think that would require that he know something about said constitution in the first place…

And those fuckwits in the tricorn hats think he knows something about ANYTHING?

9 scottslemmons  May 23, 2014 4:58:29pm

It’s always projection with Republicans. Cruz fearmongs about Dems repealing the First because **he** wants to repeal the First.

I don’t see it as a lie. Campaign spending is speech and to limit it is to limit political speech. As such, I see Reid’s proposal as an abridgement of the 1st Amendment.

False. “repeal the first amendment” is what Cruz said. That is a lie. There is no repeal of the first amendment being considered.

Downding for dishonest advocacy.

Were you against the limits on campaign spending that McCain helped write the law on?

Or is this a new-found position that limits on campaign spending abridge free speech and therefore the government should have none?

Fair enough, but there is still the issue of the lie by Cruz. This one is pretty much un-spinnable.

Yes.

18 The Ghost of a Flea  May 23, 2014 7:24:46pm

Ted Cruz, who constantly hangs out Christian nationalists and wants this to be a Christian country in which nobody gets civil liberties unless they’re Real, True tribe members, is worried about repealing the 1st amendment.

Ted Cruz, who thinks gay marriage legalization is a ‘constitutional crisis.”

But this is totally different…it’s about people who will give him money!

…I can’t repel the two-faced, self-serving horseshit of this magnitude.

Extra irony points for supporting the single most activist, WTF ruling in a long time, while absolutely committed to the idea that very basic civil liberties guaranteed and upheld by decades-old precedent should be yanked away (cough, cough, the Loving precedent and SSM).

re: #17 Dark_Falcon

Yes.

Well, then we have a very fundamental difference of opinion. I do not believe that unlimited campaign spending is good for this nation or what was intended by the First Amendment. I think most people agree with me.

re: #12 Dark_Falcon

Yet you chase ghosts. Defend the indefensible and hold court on hairs on a head. I too once voted Republican. The fleece job that now passes for policy on the right is laughable if only for the blindness required to support it. “Corporations are people too?” Yes? And a Party has died and gone belly up and stinks to high heaven. And you defend it. Barry Goldwater threw these bastards out. They are now back in. And you lend them a voice?

22 EPR-radar  May 23, 2014 7:36:48pm

re: #17 Dark_Falcon

Yes.

OK. So what about McCutcheon? Are you in agreement with the supreme court majority in that case that defines explicit quid pro quo bribery as the only kind of money for access/influence trade that can be made illegal under the first amendment?

re: #20 The Ghost of a Flea

Ted Cruz Warns Gay Marriage Will Lead to Hate Speech Laws, America on Brink of Collapse

Ahem.

If people aren’t following the link, let me point this out. The context here is a meeting with like minded pastors, and he’s claimly their freedom of speech is being challenged, which doesn’t even make sense w/r/t Citizens United.

In other words, the amendment would allow Congress and state governments to set limits on the amount that corporations and wealthy individuals can spend to support and oppose candidates. So, unless a pastor also runs a super PAC, it would not affect his life all that much, much less “muzzle” him. But Cruz, employing the Religious Right’s persecution rhetoric, claims that “41 Democrats have signed on to repealing the First Amendment” because “they don’t like it when the citizenry in their community has the temerity to criticize what they’ve done” and “they don’t like it when pastors in their community stand up and speak the truth.”

This is just a continuation of the theme of Christian persecution being used to justify more and more extreme expressions of Christian nationalism which is built around stripping 1st Amendment protections from everybody but their cadre.

So the whole thing is a massive exercise is The Big Lie.

So you have no problem with us moving full speed ahead into a plutocratic oligarchy?

You’re not at all worried that more money injected into politics could have a corrosive, corrupting effect? As it has so many thousands of times in the past.

Sorry, but you’re very naive if you don’t see a problem here.

This whole campaign spending is speech position is brand new post Citizen’s United. It was never anything close to an article of faith for conservative Republicans until a very dubious 5-4 decision created it out of whole cloth. There is no principle behind it at all, you just see unlimited political donations as a way of forestalling the GOP’s massive demographic problem. This is just more cynical dumbfuckery.

29 Shiplord Kirel  May 24, 2014 9:45:40am

What a joke, and a revealing comment on the basic stupidity and gullibility of the right-wing base, from one who knows them well.

All 99 senators but Cruz could vote to repeal the First Amendment and round up dissidents, and the courts would just point at them and laugh. (The 99 would also be publicly crucified at the next election, but that is beside the point.)

There is a definite procedure for amending the Constitution and a senate vote ain’t it. To address another ‘bagger concern, a UN treaty won’t do it either, nor will an executive order.

30 Shiplord Kirel  May 24, 2014 9:51:17am

Can we lethally inject or (preferably) guillotine a corporation? Unfortunately, no. How then is it a person outside a narrow fiduciary sense?
