RIP: Ricky Grigg, Big Wave Surfer from the 1960’s
The more you consider Ricky Grigg’s surfing life, the more you’re forced to conclude that it was unique. What other person could simultaneously claim three separate university degrees - one each from Stanford, University of Hawaii and UC Scripps - and card carrying membership of big wave riding’s Golden Generation, the crew who seized the day at Sunset Beach and Waimea Bay before anything vaguely resembling fame and money was linked with such hairball behavior?

Sad to hear this news. Ricky was charging big North Shore surf back in the early days with the likes of Greg Noll, Fred Hemmings and others. A true legend of the sport for his accomplishments. When these guys were riding big waves, the equipment they were using was horribly inferior to what we get to use these days. I had tremendous respect for all of these guys as a kid. It takes some serious sack to head out in 20 foot surf on a heavy, single-fin board without a leash (they weren’t invented yet).
