A couple small points-
Myth #5: Keeping a gun at home makes you safer.
They forget that most often the sentence would read makes you safer in the event of a violent encounter at home, as in a fighting chance. Most advocates are well aware of the larger stat. MJ just misrepresents the claim with some exceptions.
Same for CCW, same for women with guns. It’s not about the overall ststs, it’s about a fighting chance under attack.
A study was done in Texas, CCW vs overall population. CCW holders were dramatically less likely to commit a crime. That would include assault and battery.

That’s rather interesting.

Myth #10: We don’t need more gun laws—we just need to enforce the ones we have.Fact-check: Weak laws and loopholes backed by the gun lobby make it easier to get guns illegally.
These things are not exclusive. I object to MJ & the gun lobby framing it as if they are.
We do want national handgun registration B/G check at the shows. But I must add The Straw Man Gun Purchase is a fine example of an under enforced law, one that feeds weapons straight to the worst offenders-Gangs and their related drug cartels. And I could add more, but in the spirit of making things better, this is not a myth but a two fold example of necessary change.
Popular myths
School shootings are a big part of gun violence. Emotionally true perhaps perception has some merit, Tragic indeed. FBI says a very large proportion of violent and gun crime activity centers on gangs. Not the lonely kid off his psychiatric meds or treatments. Not the RWNJ playing with his AR.
Gun accidents are a huge risk in the gun owners home. Again emotionally true, those accidents are tragic. Awful when a kid finds a loaded gun out of the safe and shoots it. *shudder* But gun accident rates have been dropping a very long time. But any number higher than zero is unacceptable by way of our efforts to prevent such accidents. Work in progress.

If you make the situation specific enough, then obviously there are situations in which a gun will increase your safety. The real misrepresentation is to suppose that because these situations exist, guns increase safety.

I completely agree with you imn that first sentence. This is where soundbites and headlines and those picture caption LOLCAT memes screw up the discussion. Great for clicks sucks for serious discussion.
Now whether the “real” misrepresentation lies with the pro gun side only, I would say maybe so maybe not. And point out that it plays well for a gun rights critic to insist the pro gun comment meant it the way you said, vs the longer more detailed one I gave. “safer for you” not “safer overall for society”
“Guns save lives” can be taken in it’s textual brevity either way. If one dug into the wayback and found my writings online for I.S.I. /IDPA years ago I used that phrase. My opinion is the same now as it was then. We (the handgun school instructors) meant the saved life of the successful defender and maybe some family that was there. I don’t use the phrase here because so many will take it the wrong way, mostly by those more skeptical of guns than accepting.
