To me, there’s something obviously not right when a state is providing well over 50% of its votes during presidential elections yet the party that is losing those elections having much more Congressional representation. Take here in Virginia. Obama’s gotten over 50% of the vote both times and yet we have 8 Republicans to 3 Democrats and two of those Democrats are in huge Democratic strongholds.

Florida is a strange beast. From the border with Alabama to Jacksonville, the panhandle is pretty much an extension of the deep south with a few small exceptions.

Once you get south of Jacksonville, things get steadily more blue until eventually you hit the heavily democratic areas of Tampa/Orlando/Miami. The larger population in these centers is why Florida’s electoral college votes typically go to the Democrats.

However, the larger Republican concentration in the north causes a starker partisan divide on the state level. Not to mention GOP voters seem to be more likely to vote in state and regional elections than Democrats.

I’ll be interested to see what happens in Florida once Rick Scott finally gets run out of town.

California probably has the best redistricting system in the US, since the state legislature does not draw the lines themselves. While its not perfect, its far better than the 2000s map that was an embarrassment. Districts are as geographically small as possible and are nothing like the partisan drawn lines in other states.
