Like they always do, the media have descended to explain away the madness. And like a Rorschach Test, each outlet had its own pet cause primed and ready to be read into the situation.

So very true.

Good article, though I would not describe Elliot Rodger as “neglected” unless that means ‘not institutionalized.’ That he was a monster trapped in his own monstrous nightmare is not in doubt. For example, he complains of rejection, but there is no evidence, AFAIK, that he ever so much as talked to any girl or asked any out.

Yeah, that was my impression. It’s actually what disturbed me the most about his for-posterity rant. He had an idea about how the world should work and it involved tall blondes flocking to him like in some corpulent satrap’s haram dream. But I don’t think he understood that attraction isn’t based on appearance by itself (a recurring motif).

He never treated, much less thought of, women as autonomous human beings.

A beautiful article. Nails it.

I had a scary student once, but not so scary that I was willing to resign rather than teach another course with that student in it. I did bring the matter to the attention of the relevant authorities.

I had a scary colleague once, but not so scary that I reported them to the law. A decade or so later, at another place, they got in big trouble with the law for something not so disimilar to what I heard them say. Just luck that it didn’t turn out way worse.

It’s not easy to “pull the trigger” and set wheels in motion that will mean trouble, and maybe danger, for onesself, and will most of the time turn out to be a false positive, or at least look like one. Unless there’s bombs under construction in the basement, how could you really prove anything?

But people need to be encouraged to be more willing to bring scary situations to the attention of the authorities. The first report may come to nothing. But they’d add up, when they had to do with the most dangerous cases.
