The Gun Report: May 29, 2014 -NYTIMES
…
Carrillo and her three children had moved in with her sister and brother-in-law following the split. On the morning of the shooting, she said, a man came over to collect money she owed him. Fearing for her life, she took a rifle out of a closet. When he left, she said she tried to build up the courage to kill her children and herself, because she “wanted them to be in a better place.” She laid down next to her son in his sleeping bag, told him “I love you,” and fired the .22 into his head. Her daughters, ages 2 and 9, were sleeping in the same room at the time.
The victim is in critical condition and not expected to survive. A friend described Carrillo as a loving mother who doted on her children. During questioning, Carrillo told police the boy was not properly cared for by his father. A judge has set her bail at $1 million.
It is not known how Carrillo, who clearly grappled with mental illness and drug addiction, obtained a firearm. Here is today’s report.
