The NRA turns on the Texas Open Carry nuts
The NRA, perhaps seeing some form of writing on the wall in the state trationally held as the bastion of gun nuttery in America, has openly turned on the Open Carry nuts that have been trying to provoke a fight.
“Now we love AR-15s and AKs as much as anybody, and we know that these sorts of semiautomatic carbines are among the most popular, fastest selling firearms in America today,” the statement said. “Texas, independent-minded and liberty-loving place that it is, doesn’t ban the carrying of loaded long guns in public, nor does it require a permit for this activity. Yet some so-called firearm advocates seem determined to change this.”
“[I]t is a rare sight to see someone sidle up next to you in line for lunch with a 7.62 rifle slung across his chest, much less a whole gaggle of folks descending on the same public venue with similar arms,” the NRA continued. “Let’s not mince words, not only is it rare, it’s downright weird and certainly not a practical way to go normally about your business while being prepared to defend yourself. To those who are not acquainted with the dubious practice of using public displays of firearms as a means to draw attention to oneself or one’s cause, it can be downright scary.”
In short, the NRA accused the gun activists’ “hijinx” of curtailing gun rights by forcing restaurant owners to ban firearms.
This would be the same NRA who has in recent years suggested arming elementary school teachers, said that the only bad gun was one that wasn’t loaded at all times, and generally held that the end all of American culture is the holy firearm, all the rest of America’s achievements pales in comparison to letting it’s citizens carry weaponry (when in the service of a state authorized and administrated militia). This NRA has finally said that maaaybe in line at McDonalds isn’t the best place for a loaded AR15 with the safety off.
My money? The NRA ran a poll, perhaps nationally, and these Open Carry Gun Fetishists are causing support for an assault rifle / banning open carry to skyrocket, either just in Texas or perhaps Nationally.
It may in fact turn out that people really only support living in a culture where armed wannabe warlords walk around threatening and harassing people on paper.
Of course, the leader of Open Carry Texas (who hasn’t — yet — been outed as a White Nationalist domestic terrorist) isn’t taking this lying down:
Open Carry Texas President CJ Grisham told Mother Jones that the NRA had taken the side of gun-control advocates.
“When you’ve got the [Texas State Rifle Association] and the NRA basically coming down on us for standing up for our rights, that’s where our problem is,” Grisham explained. “Because now you guys are siding with Moms Demand Action.”
Much like the how the Tea Party has taken the worst dregs of the Conservative Id and codified it into some sort of “bad angel” creeping around the GOP, demanding they do worse and worse things, it seems the Gun Nuts in this country have their own little group of ultra-extreme radicals pushing them to further and further extremes of bad ideas.
… Funny, I thought that was the NRA’s job.
