Here’s John Ladd eight years ago:

Please fence me in

Back in the 1970s, it was a major event when a Mexican cow would wander on to Jack and John Ladd’s borderfront ranch in Palominas.

But after tightened border security in San Diego and El Paso began to funnel illegal immigration though Arizona in the early 1990s, holes began to appear more regularly along the 10 miles of barbed-wire fence separating the ranch from Mexico. The holes, cut by individual migrants or blasted out by fence-crashing vehicles, also created an easy passageway for cattle.

So, in an effort to keep Mexican cows out and their own cows in, the Ladds would devote an entire day each week to repairing the breaches.

About three years ago, they gave up.

“We’d start down in Naco and work west, but by the time we’d get to the end of the fence, the stuff we’d fixed would already be cut again,” John Ladd said.

When he tried to get federal authorities to fix the fence, Ladd said he was told barbed wire was useless in stopping human traffic, and so the government was not interested in replacing it. During the past 2 1/2 years, Ladd said he has returned 468 cows to Mexico.

Then, last spring, he got a call from the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps offering to build a border barrier on the ranch.

“I told them, ‘If you want to put up a barbed-wire fence with a vehicle barrier, let’s do it,’ ” Ladd said.

On Memorial Day weekend, the Minutemen broke ground on 2 1/2 miles of a reinforced, five-strand range fence on the Ladds’ 14,000-acre ranch. And while the group’s volunteers eventually ran out of steam and had to hire a contractor to finish the job, most importantly to the Ladds, the fence was completed.

“They put up a fence and it’s working,” Ladd said. “I don’t have a lot of people coming through that area now, and I don’t have any cows coming through.”

[…]

Ironically enough, Ladd said, just a few years back, he had one of his sons build a fence to keep out the Minutemen.

Before the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps existed, Ladd had allowed the group’s eventual founder, Chris Simcox, to access the property for immigrant-spotting outings.

Then as Simcox’s project picked up steam and more and more border-watchers began following him onto the ranch, Ladd became concerned about liability issues and shooed them away.

But after the Minuteman launched their campaign in April 2005, Ladd noticed the flow of migrants across his land had slowed to a trickle. And he was impressed.

“These people are just regular Americans who are sick of what’s happening to this country,” he said. “I believe they’ve done a big service to expose the problem, and they’re doing something about it.”

[…]

So Ladd has complained about too little help from the Feds, now he’s complaining about too much.

I try to be sympathetic. It’s tough to ranch anywhere, but especially in an arid climate, and most especially on the border. But I cannot sympathize with a guy who worked with Chris Simcox and the Minutemen. Simcox has other problems besides founding the racist Minutemen:

On June 19, 2013, Simcox was arrested by the [11] Phoenix Police Department on multiple counts related to child molestation and sexual conduct with a minor. The arrest took place in Phoenix, Arizona and involves three girls under the age of 10 years old, one of which was his own daughter. Charges currently are: two counts of child molestation, two counts of sexual conduct with a minor, and one of the attempted molestation of a child

There are other unsavory people around Ladd. This is from an article written in February 2013. In it, Ladd and a neighboring rancher are interviewed. These are the last two paragraphs:

But for the cowboys who work this land in Southern Arizona the problems remain. “The Border Patrol has extended, expanded more agents,” Ladd said. “They have big new stations, new technology, and I can still set my watch by groups every day. They are in the same place same time of day and we still can’t catch them.”

And according to Ed Ashurst, the worst case scenario is not only possible, it’s all but guaranteed. “If you are a member of Hezbollah or Hamas and you have a suitcase nuke, you can land in Mexico City with a sack full of cash and you get the right connections you can be in any city in the United States within 48 hours and your safe passage is almost guaranteed.”

Ashurst has no basis for that assessment. It’s the worst kind of lying sensationalism. So he has no credibility.

There are sincere ranchers working the family spread for generations, and there are ranchers who moved there to hunt Mexicans crossing the border. And there are hybrids, like Ladd. He’s a genuine rancher from a multi-generational outfit, but he’s been enjoying the attention he’s been getting since the border became a big news item.

Maybe the ACLU can help the poor man with his problems. The Border Patrol does need to learn how to get along with people who live near the border. But their headline on this article is bullshit. ‘For What?’ Really? Should there be NO border security?

Well that’s really the point isn’t it? The border patrol is very heavy handed. I have experienced a little, I swear I will never ever take highway 8 to Arizona again. So many checkpoints it’s ridiculous. Canine searches without cause, questions about destination… And that just getting from Palm Springs to Yuma.

Their headline is about him, the rancher being under surveillance. He talks about that, the phone calls asking him what he is doing on his own ranch, what truck he is using… Watching the border or border crossers sure. But why the rancher? because he is not cooperating. So he gets the hard way.

The rancher complains no matter what the border patrol does. Plus he’s willing to work with racists for his own ends, or fence them out when he prefers. The guy is an opportunist and a whiner.

If the border patrol is too heavy-handed, the Republicans need to be told that they have to quit beefing it up as an excuse for not reforming immigration laws.

re: #3 wrenchwench

AFAIK it can be beefed up plenty-And still be managed and run with a code of conduct that does not happily play into the hands of the GOP whiners. complaints about going from far to little enforcement to a a kind that puts the focus on him instead of the highly illegal & merely undocumented entries would be fair to make.

i’m just not holding his past association with the minutemen against him. And he is far and away from the only border rancher with a genuine problem.

Why does he get a free pass for working with a racist organization? Simcox has a whole pages of articles about him listed at Stormfront. He’s been on the Political Cesspool radio show.

I’m aware of plenty of border ranchers and their problems.

And if you want to be sympathetic to those who are hassled by the Border Patrol, maybe look at some cases involving Hispanic residents of the area.

Agents stir outcry by detaining former Arizona Gov. Raul Castro, 96

The wife and a friend of former Arizona Gov. Raul Castro are calling for changes in Border Patrol procedures after agents recently detained the frail 96-year-old in 100-degree heat for more than a half-hour.

Castro said he was traveling from his home in Nogales, Ariz., to celebrate his 96th birthday in Tucson when his vehicle triggered a radiation sensor at the Border Patrol checkpoint on Interstate 19 north of Tubac.

Castro said agents sent him to another inspection area and continued to question him outside his vehicle for 40 to 45 minutes even though he explained that he had undergone hospital testing on his pacemaker the previous day, likely triggering the sensor.

As for how much the Border Patrol can be beefed up and still be run decently, I think we may be maxed out, or beyond.
