Meh. There’s no big mystery to this - these organizations are looking for a quick technological fix, instead of investing the manpower to properly moderate comments and stop loons from ruining them for everybody. They think if they can do this with some kind of software instead of human beings taking responsibility, they can avoid alienating the people they still see as customers — and that includes the lunatics.

I agree without some sort of crowd source rough sieve and human arbiter components they will get the fail.

I’ve been wondering how long though it will be before someone pulls the nuclear option — crowdsourcing for trolls and handling them like Akismet does spam. That could be a double edged sword since some will then start reporting people as trolls whether they are or are not.

That’s pretty much what Digg did, and it’s one of the reasons they failed IMO. A crowd-sourced system that has the power to block or delete comments is very susceptible to being gamed by cliques and factions to shut down their enemies. I don’t think that kind of system is the answer, either.
