Looking at the headline my first thought was, “Where are they going to go?”

All they have to do is get a nonexistent job. So easy!

Would somebody tell me how you’re supposed to “pay” for that if you don’t have a job in the first place? You could give up having sex, I suppose, although that would also mean giving up romantic relationships as well, at least for heterosexuals. But as for the rest…

Pay for your mortgage? Where did the person get the down payment? Christ, that alone shows how out of touch the person who wrote that is. Most struggling young people I know have rent, not a mortgage payments. College loans? Well, how are you supposed to improve your prospects of getting a job if you don’t go to school? Food? Well, I guess you could just stop eating. Cell phones? Um… have you ever tried to apply for a job without a phone? I did when I first got out of college. Rather, I should say I tried because you can’t. I finally had a friend let me put down his phone number.

That image should read, “I know nothing about the real world, which is why I can be so smug.”

Obviously, I’m responding to the tweet in the first comment, not the post.

We have a bad job market and high urban costs of living, and people are surprised that young people have to move back in with their parents? You don’t say!

Sure, the job market is bad, but with the amount of student loan debt that new grads have, it doesn’t help that the coastal cities around the country that are creating new jobs also have housing policies that make apartments increasingly unaffordable, because zoning restrictions ban construction of new dense housing. When the choice comes between paying increasingly expensive rent or paying off student loans, its no shock that many young people are moving back with their parents.
