Being about two years younger than Ms. Obama, I am of her generation. I was unaware of the ethnic connotations of “gypped” until I was well into adulthood. I still have to be careful not to let it slip out. Sometimes I fail.

I used ‘gypped’ in front of my wife’s half-Romani mother. I felt freaking horrible, but she just shrugged ‘cuz she knew I didn’t mean anything by it.
