This is an interesting subject. You have largely answered your own question as well as explaining the increase in numbers of children diagnosed with autism. Change the definition of something, anything, and you change the fundamental statistics describing it. There is the one glaring error of course. Citing anecdotal cases of particular police departments does not improve statitistical accuracy but the big booboo would be reclassifying as rapes all reports of alleged rapes as factual. You can’t do that either and maintain methodological rigor.

No, I don’t think this is a numbers crunching thing. It’s a belief in the crime thing. We have a systemic problem with this and crimes against women. One just has to look at the GOP response to allowing abortions for rape victims.

Legitimate Rape being the most memorable. Many still think a married woman cannot be raped by her husband or a Sex Worker cannot be raped by her John.

Any women having sex outside of marriage is fair game to some and that includes members of Law Enforcement. They simply did not believe a crime was committed and therefore did not report it as such.

Well I certainly have no desire to engage in an ideological fight with you on such a subject and I cannot disagree with your political assessment. I think that is correct. I merely observe that accurate statistics on such a subject are difficult to get. New Orleans has had and probably still does have a third rate police force. Statistics regarding their handling of sexual assaults can hardly be extrapolated easily to other departments. Ditto for Washington. So the key questions are what percentage of alleged cases do you think are exaggerated or fabricated? And who should make this decision? Who do you think is doing this right?

I think the recent changes the FBI made to SA reporting is a big step forward. “Forceable” is removed and men are included in Rape statistics. Rape also includes activies other than vaginal/penile penetration.

I think these distinction are helpful to law enforcment. There is a lot less wiggle room. Regardless of what an individual officer believes, the definitions are a very clear.

And I agree. It is impossible to formulate sound public policy or allocate resources without proper analysis of relevant accurate statistics. This is also why I believe national institutions, the senior government, needs to be the responsible authority.
