Two ways to look at the issue. If the Government lets anyone claim their set of beliefs is a *religion* it opens the door to legitimizing Pastafarians or other obviously fabricated religions. On the other hand if the Government said only official religions can be recognized by the law, then they could possibly require the religious group to publish their official Creed and Policies and then require the religious Organization to abide by their own rules lest they lose their official status.

No, but they probably will.

Some Religions, no doubt, will say “our creed is the Bible.” Which translation? Well, uh, King James, yeah, that’s the ticket. So: No shrimp, no clothing with two kinds of thread, see the priest if you have strange skin lumps, and meanwhile ring a bell to warn everybody. Stone your kids to death if….. And this Jesus character: love your neighbor, feed the poor, sell your possessions and don’t be rich [it is to laugh!] etc. etc. And nothing definitive about teh ghey

this ruling as I’ve said before is a Christian Supremacist ruling. Right wing Christians will be far be the largest recipient of favorable rulings now that precedent has been set giving SCOTUS the power to invent law and give particular (favorable) groups of people exception to law. This Conservative-dominated SCOTUS will not give any hearing to any case proposing gay marriage on religious grounds. It simply does not fit their preconditioned religious and ideological agenda.

re: #4 Rocky-in-Connecticut

But, boy will this create a backlash.

I wonder how many of the Supreme Court justices on the Conservative side have massive conflict of interest issues. Might want to be keeping a running record of these for the future.

Yup.

United Church of Christ sues over North Carolina gay marriage ban

The liberal denomination of some 1 million members is the first in the country to attack a same-sex marriage ban on religious freedom grounds, taking a cue from religious conservatives who used the same argument over the contraception mandate in the Affordable Care Act.

I don’t like it at all. Religious freedom is never above other democratic laws. It’s Pandora’s box. But it wasn’t us who opened it. So that’s just playing by their rules.
