Pompeo, Tiahrt Wage Political Title Fight in GOP Primary
This is red on red, and neither of these two candidates will be good for Kansas’ future. That’s the rub: even though both are full metal wingnut “stop the government yesterday” types one or the other is likely to win and to further aid the Brownback cabal in dragging our state back to the middle ages.
Mike Pompeo and Todd Tiahrt are well-known conservative Republicans who repeatedly won elections to serve south-central Kansas in Congress.
They find themselves in the position of battling each other for a job representing the state in Washington, D.C.
It is reasonable to assume a campaign debate scheduled Monday in Wichita between these political veterans might involve polite conversation about points of concurrence. Forget about it. In their ongoing 4th District congressional primary, Tiahrt and Pompeo and their respective supporters are engaging in a GOP family feud punctuated by slash-and-burn denunciations. This is clearly a race capable of ripping Republicans apart.
Tiahrt, who held the House seat for eight terms and is attempting a comeback after four years on the sidelines, said Pompeo finds himself out of touch with most Kansans. He reached that conclusion after endorsing Pompeo in 2010 and 2012.
