I always wondered how he got reelected after seeing his incredibly lousy response to Katrina. Seriously, how bad was his opponent that the people of N.O. would rather keep Nagin?

I think that sometimes people are more afraid of the unknown.

Sad. And now it will all be used to say no one can trust a democrat.

As if that wasn’t being said by wingnuts before.

In all seriousness, no one can trust a politician, period. Its just that democrats have been the lesser of two evils lately.

Even if he had an R after his name, a certain news outlet would have consistent typos on the chyron…

He did have an R after his name for most of his voting life until he decided to run for office in blue New Orleans. Link

The question of how Nagin got reelected is an interesting one, and the answer revealing. Most people outside south Louisiana don’t realize that Nagin was actually perceived as the more conservative of the finalists in the election, just as in his first campaign he had been the “pro-business” choice. His opponent, Mitch Landrieu (brother of Senator Mary) was reviled by conservatives as a liberal (which, by Louisiana’s deranged standards, he might be). So in the rearranged demography of post-Katrina New Orleans, many white conservatives voted for Nagin, enough in fact to give him the victory (with many black voters actually going for Landrieu). By the next election cycle, the demography and other factors had changed sufficiently that Landrieu could win.

Currently, Mary Landrieu, who would be considered a conservative in most sane venues, is again being attacked as a raving liberal by her moonbat prospective Repub opponents in the senatorial race. I hope with all my heart she wins, because conservative or not, she’s the best we’ll see from Louisiana for many years.
