You don’t have to choose between Israelis & Palestinians, though many may push you to do so and if you don’t choose their side (which is invariably the “right” one), you may well find yourself accused of being an apologist for the opposing side.

The world is divided into people who think they are right.

As an American Muslim (convert), I felt for many years that I had to pick a side, but I was reluctant to do so as the situation seemed so emotionally volatile, complicated, and confusing and I knew—as someone who has spent more than half a century on this earth—that nothing that’s turned into that big of a mess is ever the fault of just one side. I also met both Palestinians & Israeli Jews who I liked & admired.

After much reading (which I’m still doing), I finally found an answer I can live with from Amos Oz, a famous Israeli writer & intellectual who also happens to be an atheist. Among many other wise things, he said:

You no longer have to choose between being pro-Israel and pro-Palestine. You have to be pro-peace.

So that’s my “side”. I’m pro-peace.

I read Amos Oz’ How to Cure a Fanatic after seeing your recommendation. Currently working on My Promised Land by Ari Shavit.

There must be a way forward.

Gonna go look up My Promised Land right now. Thanks.

Yes, there must be a way.

Obama and Kerry have not adopted the “moral equivalence” standpoint. That may have something too do with their at least tacitly consenting to the resumption of drone warfare in Afghanistan.

If it is okay to attack in order to defend oneself against being attacked some day, it is also okay to attack while one is being attacked.
