I have no idea what to say about this.

Wow, I don’t either.

My comment at Ynet:

This is utter insanity. For the love of God and the sake of the Israeli state…stop it. Stop saying these things. Stop doing these things. You are substituting madness for policy. You are providing justifcation to every anti Semite out there who wants to claim that Jews are murderers. You provide justifcation to every terrorist who claims that Israel wants to kill all Palestinians…by actually advocating exactly that! Don’t fight terrorists by being just as bad as they are. Show them why you are better. Don’t try to show them, and us, you are worse.

I went to go look for your comment. Big mistake—it reminded me why I usually avoid reading comments.

Yeah. The stuff there is horrifying. The Harpy would be giddy with joy at some of the comments.

Here is the thing- War makes animals of men. I get that. But what this does is goes past that action reaction emotion. It’s code for wanting to just kill Palestinians. It’s obvious to me that aiming strictly at the enemy is what wins a battle. There is nothing to be gained by killing anyone except the militants and their direct (like missile storehouses) infrastructure.

He has lost cognizance of the fact Israel has everything to lose and nothing to gain in killing or wounding non combatants. It’s literally sick. Hatefully sick, the kind of mindset that leads to mass killings without cause.

I really think this attitude may well have infected a lot of the military, although that is my suspicion and not anything I can verify. It would go some way to explaining the preposterous number of civilian shelters that have been blown to bits for no apparent reason. This many civilian casualties and civilian buildings razed (often with their unlucky occupants still inside) by arstrikes and artillery fire leads me to conclude that this is not merely indifference but actual deliberate actions in some cases.

If people in the top brass agree with this sentiment, it will be impossible to put a stop to casual atrocities among the rank and file (which is always a risk in war no matter who is fighting)

Israel is supposed to be better then this. Israel was better then this. One of my dearest friends (and my faculty mentor in history. She refers to herself as my Jewish mother and I should have been so lucky) is a deeply observent Jewish woman and I know she is appalled at what has happened.

I know I am. Its like watching your friend turn into a self destructive alcoholic with a bottomless trust fund to draw off of.

The fact that the Israeli military went from target strikes preceded by warning to unannounced artillery fire into civilian areas is sufficient in my mind to indicate that this feeling extends into well into upper reaches of the Israeli army.

I hate to think so…but it looks that way to me. The UN shelter hit the other day was apparntly struck by three 155 mm howitzer rounds according to recovered fragments. Nothing remotely discriminating about that, and the GPS coordinates of the shelter had been forwarded to the IDF. That makes it even worse.

So the next time I attempt to defend Israel against another jerk posting “the Israelis are the real terrorists” I’m going to get slapped back with a link to this insanity. Thanks a lot General…

Aaaand now a stalker dude in Israel is calling me a Nazi, telling me to drop dead and also telling me to go to hell.

Apparently, saying it is a bad idea to advocate the mass murder of palestinian civilians now makes you a Nazi.

Irony is dead and buried.

Also worth pointing out, fwiw, that the Germans did not in fact elect Hitler as their leader.

Not only that, but recently, Turkish PM Erdogan has been raising a stink by Godwining the situation in Gaza, openly saying that the Israelis are behaving like Nazis and attempting to commit genocide on the Palestinian people.

Granted….he is running for President in Turkey, so ordinarily, I expect all kinds of silly BS, especially from him - he has a habit of shooting off his mouth in unexpected ways.

But with this op-ed, and other recent statements from the Israeli far-right (both in and out of government) it simply ends up making Erdogan look like some kind of political genius; such incendiary statements from various figures of the Israeli far-right essentially prove Erdogan’s point.

Not good. Not one damned bit.

I’ve read from other Jews tghat have compared what they are doing to Nazis, or very much Nazi like…

This is the path that took William Calley to My Lai. Don’t go there, Israel.

This is the exact same logic Hamas uses to justify firing missiles at Israeli civilians.

Beware when you battle monitors,
lest you become a monster.
And as you gaze into the abyss,
the abyss gazes also,
into you.

Beware when you battle monitors,

This kind of monitor…

Or this kind?

They can both be nasty.
