“Kansans do have a very important question in front of them,” said Patrick Ishmael of the conservative Show-Me Institute in Missouri. “How do they want their government to work?”

I think this is the real question, because for the far right, crippling the government and starving the public schools with massive tax cuts is a feature, not a bug.

Exactly right. The zealots in office here really want everyone homeschooling with the bible.

As of 2013, Kansas education was squarely in the middle of the NAEP state-by-state rankings. NAEP report
This is what economists and sociologists call a natural experiment. It’s not, not yet, an observed fact that liberal policies bring prosperity or better NAEP rankings to Kansas.

What is an observed fact is that somehow or other, California does worse than Kansas, Colorado does better, Oklahoma does worse…

It’s not, not yet, an observed fact

There are, however, many already observable facts, which logically lead to only one conclusion:

1) KS has seen a dramatic drop in revenues, even more drastic than predicted.
2) Future tax cuts are still planned
3) Emergency funds had to be tapped and will again if they balance the budget.
4) The rating agencies have already downgraded KS, keenly aware of “the big equation” and what the tax cuts have done
5) Schools are not only a target, but squarely in the center of the sights.

Ultimately, some states will still do worse, and some states will do better than KS. One guarantee, however, is Kansas will do worse than it has in the past.
