I like the Capaldi Doctor but I am a bit surprised that the references to past personalities is suddenly gone. After the first episode I assumed he would shed personality bits gradually.

I wonder when/how they’re going to explain why he has the same face as somebody the Tenth Doctor saved from Pompeii… it can’t be just a never-mentioned coincidence, right?

The last time the Whoniverse reused an actor, fans went wild and they finally had to write it into the show. (I refer, of course, to Torchwood’s Gwen Cooper, who bore an astonishing resemblance to a Victorian era maid from a previous Doctor episode. Turned out to be Gwen’s great-great-great-grandmother, who had some genetic predisposition to be extra-sensitive to time travellers/Rift energy.)

Don’t worry, they will. :)

Have faith in Moffat, as existentially terrifying as he is.

Now just 15 minutes.

re: #3 sagehen

Soon enough would be my guess - the scene with him in the street with the hobo when he’s still somewhat out of his mind has him questioning “why this face?” while looking at his reflection. Fairly sure I remember an interview with Moffat bringing the issue up and mentioning that it will be addressed in some manner before the current season/series comes to a conclusion.

Having just finished watching it, I really like the 2nd episode, a step up from the season premiere, and really liking what Capaldi is doing with the role. Based on what i’ve learned from others (including a couple of folks who’ve seen parts of the leaked screeners that i’ve been avoiding like hellfire), next one will be a fun comic adventure, and episodes 4 and 5 should have folks salivating in anticipation. Looks like the fans are in for a good run in the coming weeks.

Starting now in Eastern Time Zone

8 The War TARDIS  Aug 30, 2014 6:00:23pm

Here we go.

9 The War TARDIS  Aug 30, 2014 6:04:23pm

Well, everyone was a dick there.

10 The War TARDIS  Aug 30, 2014 6:08:25pm

Liking Danny. Seems it will be good.

Clara is not nice to the military.

11 The War TARDIS  Aug 30, 2014 6:10:19pm

Though she seems to have become better.

Likely Danny. Reminds me off the Doctor.

12 becominginvisible  Aug 30, 2014 6:13:33pm

re: #3 sagehen

In Deep Breath he did keep asking why he picked that face and why was it familiar. At least Clara is closer to normal behavior, I have trouble believing that she would be so upset over the Doctor’s change in appearance she didn’t want to be around him.

13 The War TARDIS  Aug 30, 2014 6:18:07pm

Oo We have the twist, the Dalek flipped.

14 The War TARDIS  Aug 30, 2014 6:26:01pm

Good job military.

And the Doctor kills a friendly.

15 The War TARDIS  Aug 30, 2014 6:39:11pm

The Doctor fucked up.

Good slap from Clara though.

And she has managed to shift the Doctor.

16 Archangelus  Aug 30, 2014 6:42:38pm

re: #14 The War TARDIS

And the Doctor kills a friendly.

Don’t see how it was him killing the friendly - “He was dead already. I was saving us!”. Would it have been better if he’d have spouted the old overused “sorry, so sorry” line of imminent character death before that?

And yeah, good slap from Clara indeed.

17 The War TARDIS  Aug 30, 2014 6:42:43pm

Hey, it’s Missy again.

18 The War TARDIS  Aug 30, 2014 6:44:18pm

I think we can see that Clara is now the Doctor’s morality core.

19 The War TARDIS  Aug 30, 2014 6:48:48pm

And a callback to the 1st Dalek episode.

20 becominginvisible  Aug 30, 2014 6:51:39pm

re: #18 The War TARDIS

The companions have usually been along as someone to remind the Doctor of morality. The greeter of heaven reminds me of an episode with Rory and Amy, I think it was The Girl Who Waited. I should probably watch older episodes instead of hanging out on a Rotterdam live cam watching ships on the River and Erasmushbrug bridge.

21 The War TARDIS  Aug 30, 2014 6:52:13pm

And the Doctor turns the Dalek back to bad.

22 Archangelus  Aug 30, 2014 6:53:19pm

“Fantastic idea for a movie. Terrible idea for a proctologist” - had me choke on my drink and nearly ruin my keyboard, that one.

23 Jayleia  Aug 30, 2014 6:53:29pm

No Doctor…that’s not what the Daleks do.

That’s what you do, Doctor.

24 The War TARDIS  Aug 30, 2014 6:53:41pm

Somebody said this was a badly written episode. I don’t see that.

25 The War TARDIS  Aug 30, 2014 6:54:45pm

re: #23 Jayleia

It’s what both do.

The Daleks exterminate. The Doctor kills Daleks.

26 becominginvisible  Aug 30, 2014 6:55:40pm

Darn forgot to hit reply. @24 I didn’t say it but I was thinking it was predictable. I just wasn’t sure if I was me or not.

27 Archangelus  Aug 30, 2014 6:55:54pm

re: #24 The War TARDIS

Somebody said this was a badly written episode. I don’t see that.

Finely written in my humble opinion.

28 Archangelus  Aug 30, 2014 6:57:36pm

re: #25 The War TARDIS

It’s what both do.

The Daleks exterminate. The Doctor kills Daleks.

The former are genocidal monsters that kill indiscriminately, the latter does so when necessary and generally reluctantly (excluding 9th “gonna wipe out every last stinking Dalek” bit in the end of the first season). Bit of a difference.

29 The War TARDIS  Aug 30, 2014 7:00:31pm

re: #28 Archangelus

Not when it comes to the raging hatred.

That shook more than a little bit.

30 Jayleia  Aug 30, 2014 7:01:24pm

YOU ARE A GOOD DALEK.

31 The War TARDIS  Aug 30, 2014 7:06:43pm

re: #30 Jayleia

In the 9th Doctor episode “Dalek,” the Dalek says “You would make a Good Dalek.”

Doctor has gotten worse since then.

Still can’t judge if the Half-Faced Man from the last episode jumped or was pushed. Could go either way.

32 The War TARDIS  Aug 30, 2014 7:13:42pm

Should note there was an episode in the Second Doctor era where he did turn 3 Daleks good.

33 becominginvisible  Aug 30, 2014 7:21:57pm

Appears to me that episodes 1 and 2 are about the wavy line of morality. When machines kill, either as a built purpose or as defence is it acceptable to kill them? It has been inferred in the early episodes of the ‘new’ Doctor that his actions had resulted in a lot of, for lack of a better term, deaths of beings that were innocent. Something he didn’t have a problem with in his earlier lives but now rather haunts him.

34 The War TARDIS  Aug 30, 2014 7:33:40pm

The episode 2 weeks from now is the one to watch for.

It may be a the Blink Killer, in terms of being the best episode of Doctor Who, and the fright factor.

The name of the episode is “Listen.”

35 steve_davis  Aug 31, 2014 10:57:41am

What the hell happened to this? I had my DVR set for Doctor Who at 8 last night, and got some crappy special instead.

36 The War TARDIS  Aug 31, 2014 1:57:36pm

re: #35 steve_davis

You should be able to see it sometime in the next week. I would give the episode a passing grade.

The special was about the world tour.

37 De Kolta Chair  Aug 31, 2014 11:06:54pm

Speaking of Brit telly, does anyone else watch the detective show “Scott & Bailey”? It’s pretty good. I generally prefer police procedurals that stick to cases and don’t go into coppers’ personal lives, but it’s addictive.

38 hartly  Sep 1, 2014 1:00:26pm

I realize I’m coming in late to this thread, but I just saw Into the Dalek and I have to say it is by far the best NuWho I’ve ever seen. Peter Capaldi is brilliant, though sometimes I have problems understanding him. But I really wish they’d get rid of Clara, and either have the Doctor travel solo or with a more interesting (possibly alien) character. That’s not gonna happen of course, not now that they’re pairing her off with a boyfriend. And I’m not looking forward to the conclusion of the tea-drinking heaven lady story arc.

I’m really hoping they do treat it as a “never-mentioned coincidence”. It’s too small a detail to make a big deal out of, no matter how loudly some of the more vocal fans might squawk. The old series had several examples of companions - and even one Doctor - being played by the same people who played other one-off characters earlier or later in the series’ history. Every time an actor is reused for another role I don’t see why there needs to be an explanation.

40 William Barnett-Lewis  Sep 1, 2014 9:51:14pm

Just watched the episode.

1) best dalek episode I’ve seen.
2) The line about soldiers at the end? As a vet, it’s bloody priceless.

41 The War TARDIS  Sep 1, 2014 10:13:02pm

re: #38 hartly

If that is the sort of Sci-Fi you want, go to Battlestar Galactica, or some other sort of shallow crap.

42 Targetpractice  Sep 2, 2014 1:04:05pm

Finally got a chance to watch last night, had to wait for it to show on On-Demand. And the first thing I thought of as I watched this episode was one of the Six Doctor’s audio adventures, “Jubilee.” I also noticed that there was more than a little of the Ninth Doctor in Twelve’s performance, that anger and hatred the Time War instilled in him bubbling to the surface. And it was all the more evident by how Nine was told he’d make a good Dalek, but Twelve is a good Dalek. In the end, no matter how hard he tries to deny it, he is never going to be able to think of the Daleks as anything other than genocidal pepper pots.

And it seems Clara is rather nicely falling into an old role that past companions have, namely as the morality pet who is there to keep the Doctor from giving into the darker facets of his personality. Gone is the sexual tension that hung over things like a bad smell, for which I’m very grateful to Moffat. Perhaps that’s one of the benefits of older actors playing the part, there’s less inclination to write in those unresolved sexual tension storylines and more to explore who the Doctor is as a walking enigma.

re: #37 De Kolta Chair

Watch it when I can find it. My local PBS is just sad. Shows that are more than a few years old, no complete series and cut versions. I discovered an online alternative. Not the best quality but it gives me the chance to decide if I want to try to buy DVDs.
