On September 4th, Lance Cpl. Sean Groubert pulled over a driver in a Circle K parking lot in Columbia, South Carolina. He immediately asked the driver, Levar Edward Jones, for his license. As Jones turned wordlessly to grab it, Groubert began firing shots at Jones, landing at least one bullet in his hip.
After asking Jones to grab his license Groubert is understandably alert, and Jones says nothing as he quickly reaches back into his car. Any trained law enforcement official would be foolish not to remain alert in that situation, however, the controversy at hand arises at the point when Groubert shoots Jones before he has a chance to turn around.
