This came to my attention because I was talking to someone nearby about GrooveShark and similar services like ‘Recommended or you” on Youtube, etc.
They said, “I occasionally select a band like “Dropkick Murphy” to keep them guessing what I like.”

Nevermind the fact that Dropkick Murphy does what they do quite well. They would likely be respected at a bar in Ireland or London.

Seriously you had never heard of them??

Their song “Shipping up to Boston” is the theme for the TNT show “RIzzoli and Isles”.

Dude where have you been? They’ve been around forever but i do like em, Flogging Molly, and especially The Pogues in this sub genre.

As a Boston native it is a little surprising that anyone could not have heard of them, they are so ubiquitous around here. Can’t go out to a bar without at least a couple of their tunes playing while you are there. Just about any Boston based movie or tv show will have them on the soundtrack and they are played at every Red Sox game.

Celtic Punk, that’s a label I’d never thought of. I always categorized them as Celtic, Rock, on my self and in my music media storage.

Celtic punk is a label that a guy who never knew anything about them (me) applied twenty minutes after listening to them for the first time. Yours is likely more accurate. :)

I’ve no doubt heard their music on the radio and TV. My son tells me he owns some of their music so I can’t use the excuse that I don’t live near Boston.

Plus, this, which scores them points in my book.

Dropkick Murphys Singer Kicks the Crap Out of Skinhead Doing Nazi Salute on Stage During St. Patrick’s Day Concert

(Dropkick Murphys on stage performing, bunch of people get on stage with them. One guy unwisely starts doing Nazi salutes. Mayhem ensues.)

This is my oldest son’s band. The video is only two years old and already has 68 views on youtube.

The guys all have day jobs

They’re also very pro union and raised hell when a Wisconsin Republican ally of Scott Walker for using one of their songs without petmission.

> 30 years ago I was in an Irish bar in Philadelphia with a party of Italians. (I am a Canadian) The Italian folks had never been to an Irish bar before and weren’t followers of Irish music.

The band was from Ireland. I forget their name. They sang “republican” songs . (and the British came and they killed me sheep and they burned me home and they insulted me wife and they killed me dog and……_)

By the end of the night, the Italians who never gave a though to the Irish were saying “Up the republic!” at the appropriate place.

That was the day when I realized the power of music. I said that the British were not all that stupid when they forbade Scottish music. (my ancestors)

That was the day when I decided that the main weapon of the Irish republicans was the music.

Music has power.

Oh wow, I just saw the Prodigals for the second time at the Celtic Classic in Bethlehem, PA yesterday!

Personnel changes have altered their sound a bit, but they are still great live. Gregory is putting a lot of energy into his brother’s foundation, the UN official killed in the Haiti earthquake.

The Prodigals call their music “Jig-Punk”, at least that’s on their ’90s t-shirt.

“Jig-Punk” Wondering how to step to that.

It’s like Riverdance, but you spill Guinness on everyone.
