This is so true. I do not believe in Gods. But one of the only places online, that I do not see abuse from Atheist men, is at this site. It is so normal, I have never thought much about it.
One of the reasons I was never a fan of these leaders of the Atheist movement, is because I have never felt welcomed. Even mentioning you are not a fan of these leaders, could get a woman an onslaught of sexist abuse, even if your criticism had nothing to do with them being unfair or unwelcoming to women.

It is also why I have always said, Atheism is not a cure for a stupid, unenlightened society. It is merely a way of looking at the world, and that is all.

Anytime something becomes a movement, the exact same crap you see in every other movement immediately rises to the surface. Just being a movement implies a hierarchy, which nearly always becomes patriarchal.

Obviously, not believing in god(s) doesn’t lead to sexist attitudes; however I can definitely see how women making inroads into ANY sphere that has historically been an ‘old boy’s club’ will produce that result.

The men who are always objecting, who claim that women will lower the tone or whatever, are whiny, nasty, petty little gender-disgracing shitebags. To see what they are made of, see them collect in numbers on the comments at the Guardian every time Jessica Valenti posts, no matter what the subject, just to spew their collective hate. (Unfortunately the Guardians comment moderation policy is FUCKED, resulting in such articles being constantly ‘occupied’ by these scumbags).

Even Richard Dawkins blamed rape on the victims? Un-f***ing-believable. And being reminded about Michael Shermer made me feel so dirty for having once admired him.

So many people I’ve liked over the years turned out to be d-bags. I’m a lousy judge of character, aren’t i?

Dawkins didn’t blame rape on the victims. Like Harris and others some of his statements on issues affecting women do betray levels of unacknowledged privilege (and he needs to stop using twitter pronto) but he’s not an evil bastard.

On a broader point I think we need to remember that people are imperfect and making a dumb comment on twitter on one issue shouldn’t be seen as making that person and his work invalid or that the person is suddenly so toxic that communication is impossible and total shunning must ensue.

I think they key phrase here is: Dominant Male.
