Sleepy Maggie is also the name of a Scottish Country Dance done to this tune. The tune used for dancing starts at about 1:40. They would have to play it straight for dancing; there’s a lot of improvisation in this performance.

He did a more traditional Sleepy Maggie in 1995 with Mary Jane Lamond. Worth checking out.

I have heard a number of variations on Sleepy Maggie and Drowsy Maggie. This is a good one…different, but good. I am not a purist on traditional arrangements of Celtic music (my spouse is a bit stricter than I am) so I have no issue with introducing modern techniques or non-traditional instruments as long as they fit the piece in some way.

Here is an “Official” video from his 1995 Album with Mary Jane Lamond.

Nothing wrong with non-traditional variations, just that music for dancing needs to have a fairly strict structure. I’ve danced to Beatles music arranged for a reel and a strathspey; it just has to have a predictable rhythm.
